DURANGO, Colo. -- No. 12-ranked Midwestern State jumped out to the early lead but was unable to holdoff Fort Lewis at the Skyhawks came away with a 4-2 win Friday afternoon at Dirks Field.
For the second straight year, the Mustangs suffered a setback to the Fort Lewis in the campaign opener. That's a first in program history, but MSU rallied to peel off a 13-match unbeaten streak to advance to the 2013 South Central Region finals.
Midwestern will try to avoid an 0-2 start when it takes on defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason champion Colorado Mesa Sunday afternoon in Grand Junction. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Andrew Power got the ignited the Mustangs with two goals in the first 30 minutes of the game.
The Waterford, Ireland native converted an assist from
Albert Rodriguez to allow MSU to draw first blood in the 23rd minute, then blasted a ball into the net from 40 yards out in the 31st minutes to give the Mustangs a 2-0 edge.
It was his first multiple-goal performance for MSU after tallying five goals in 2013.
The Skyhawks retrieved one of the goals right before the half as Tamino Kroeger headed a corner serve from Yannis Becker in the 44th minute.
Fort Lewis needed less than three minutes into the second session to claim the equalizer off of the boot of Cesar Castillo in the 48th minute.
The Skyhawks captilized on a turnover in MSU's defensive third to grasp lead on Kroeger's second goal of the contest in the 55th minute then Tyler Miller tapped in a rebound goal in the 77th minute to salt the game away.
Fort Lewis held a narrow 9-7 edge in shots in each half while placing just one more shot on frame.
