Mustangs salvage split with #25 Texas Woman's

DENTON, Texas -- Midwestern State's Katelyn Vinson and Kelley Schaefer delivered key hits in a big sixth inning in Game as the Mustangs salvaged a split with No. 25-ranked Texas Woman's Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

The Mustangs took Game 2 by a 6-1 count after TWU senior pitcher Brandie Lander no-hit MSU for an 8-0 run-rule win in five innings in the opener.

MSU's win snapped a program long seven-game skid as the Mustangs went to 24-16 on the season and 12-8 in Lone Star Conference play.

Lander issued only a leadoff walk to Kim Jerrick in the opener, then erased that runner when Haley Howerton was cut down stealing at second base after reaching on a fielder's choice in the first inning. The Gun Barrel City notched four strikeouts becoming the first pitcher to record a no-hitter against Midwestern State.

The Pioneers scored two in the first, one in the second and five in the third inning powered by home runs from Kendra Sancet (17th) and Katie Hines (9th).

MSU sophomore Kat Batey took the loss to fall to 5-5 on the season allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in three innings.

The Mustangs snapped a nine inning scoreless streak in the fifth inning of Game 2 ignited by a Demi Thompson's leadoff double down the left-field line.

Senior catcher Kim Jerrick drew a walk and junior shortstop Katy Vandewater stroked a single to center field to load the bases before Schaefer drilled a three-run double down the left-field line to give MSU its first lead of the series at 3-0.

Hines, TWU's starter in the finale, issued a walk to Shelby Carter before exiting in favor of Lander, who hadn't allowed an earned run in 12 previous innings this weekend.

But Vinson greeted her with a three-run blast over the left-field fence to give MSU control with a 6-0 lead.

TWU rallied for a single run in the sixth, but it wasn't enough to shake Midwestern State starter Katlyn Holmes who scattered six singles over her seven innings and notched four strikeouts to improve to 9-6 in the circle.

Vinson finished 3-for-4 with her sixth double and sixth homer while driving in three runs, while Schaefer banged her seventh and eighth two-baggers to go 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Midwestern State hits the road to face Central Oklahoma in a twin bill Tuesday afternoon Edmond. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
