LAWTON, Okla. -- Xavier Blackburn and
Cam Adderley combined for 35 points to lead Midwestern State to its ninth straight taking a 74-71 result over Cameron Saturday night at Aggie Gym.
The Mustangs (20-6, 12-2) clinched a share of their eighth Lone Star Conference championship later in the evening when Texas A&M-Commerce upended Tarleton State 79-76.
Still, MSU heads into the LSC Postseason Tournament as the No. 2 seed and faces Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday afternoon at the Allen (Texas) Event Center. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
The Mustangs have now 20 games in six consecutive seasons which is the second longest in run in school history as MSU claimed 20 victories in eight straight campaigns from 1973-81 under legendary coach Dr. Gerald Stockton.
Midwestern also stakes claim to its third-straight LSC championship and sixth in the last eight years.
But it wasn't easy for the Mustangs even after a strong opening half effort. MSU used a 9-2 run midway through the opening half to stretch the lead to 30-20 when Adderley hit a jumper with 7:02 to go in the first half.
The Mustangs would take a 12-point advantage into the half and pushed the bulge to 14 when Blackburn converted a layup to start the second half for a 42-28 lead.
But Cameron came storming back behind a 25-point effort by senior guard Craig Foster.
The Aggies used an 11-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 44-40 with 15:18 to play and clawed to within a point at 52-51 on Desmond Henry's driving layup with 9:25 to play.
The Mustangs just wouldn't let Cameron get over the hump and did it at the charity stripe as MSU connected on 15-of-16 free throws over the final 5:27 of the game to keep the Aggies at bay.
Blackburn finished with a team-high 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Adderley hit 5-of-7 shots from the field for 17 points.
Senior guard
Monzaigo Williams directed the Mustangs' attack with eight points and five assists as MSU finished the game shooting 52.1 percent from the field.
Cameron snapped the Mustangs' 15-game run of out-rebounding their opponent by finishing with a 31-27 edge on the boards.
The Aggies close the regular season with an 11-14 overall record and 5-9 in LSC play.
