IT'S DOME MAGIC! Mustangs erase 19-point deficit to beat Cameron in OT

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State rallied from 19 points down in the first half to overtake Cameron 70-67 in overtime Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

"This was a really big win for us because we need to be playing our best ball before heading to Tarleton next week," MSU coach Nelson Haggerty said.

The win was the second straight for the Mustangs, who improved to 13-6 on the season while claiming sole possession of second place in the Lone Star Conference by improving to 5-2 in league play.

MSU begins the second half of league play battling Tarleton State Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

But things didn't look good in the opening half as the Mustangs struggled their way to shooting 24.4 percent from the field (10-of-41) allowing the Aggies steadily pull for a 40-21 lead when Tank Mayberry completed a three-point play 54 seconds before intermission.

Midwestern turned the table on the Aggies led by senior guards Monzaigo Williams and JaMichael Rivers, who combined for 23 points after the start of the second half.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs frustrated Cameron into 4-of-21 shooting in the second half after the Aggies singed the nets at a 60-percent clip in the opening half.

"We like the second-half stops we got. We made shots when we needed to," Haggerty said. "Z and JaMike made big shots when we needed them."

The Mustangs used a 10-2 run to start the second half to pull within 43-35 on Cam Adderley's three-point play with 16:44 to play.

The Aggies would push the lead back to 13 before the Williams keyed a 10-2 run late in the contest hitting a 3-pointer and leaning jumper to pull the Mustangs to within three at 55-52 with 2:36 to play.

Then Rivers connected on three free throws after he was fouled on a shot from beyond the arc with 1:01 to go then the 6-2 senior converted a three-point play on a transition layup to give the Mustangs their first lead of the second half at 58-57.

Williams sank a pair of free throws give MSU a 60-57 lead with nine seconds remaining, but Craig Foster would send the game to overtime on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Midwestern opened the overtime period on a 6-1 run and held on for the victory.

Williams poured in a game-high 22 points and dished out five assists while Rivers finished with a season-high 13 points.

Junior forward Xavier Blackburn notched his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds , while Cam Adderley had 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Desmond Henry splashed in 16 points off of the bench to pace the Aggies who dropped to 9-9 and 3-4.

It was MSU's 16th straight win over Cameron at D.L. Ligon Coliseum dating back to the 1990-91 season.
