Fuller, Mustangs take down St. Gregory's 78-65

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State Mustangs woke up in the second half to defeat the St. Gregory's (Okla.) Cavaliers 78-65 on Sunday afternoon.

The Mustangs (10-3) showed signs of fatigue following a long road trip, allowing the Cavaliers to build an 11 point lead in the first half.

MSU shot just 36.1 percent from the floor in the first frame while allowing St. Gregory's to shoot 48.6 percent.

The Cavaliers forced 8 Mustang turnovers in the first half and in turn scored 10 points off of those miscues. MSU would close the gap to 38-33 by halftime.

"We were real sluggish in the first," Midwestern State coach Nelson Haggerty said. "They have had seven days to prepare for us."

After halftime, Midwestern State reemerged as a team who was focused on both sides of the ball.

The Mustangs got hot, shooting 57.1 percent from the field in the second half, and hustled defensively by grabbing 45 rebounds and blocking 6 shots.

MSU finished the game outrebounding the Cavaliers 58-28, including 24 offensive rebounds.

"We needed to have that kind of rebounding margin after the way we played defense in the first half," Haggerty said.

Sophomore forward Trevor Fuller was a spark plug for the Mustangs in the second half. Fuller posted a career highs in points (17), rebounds (11), and blocks (6).

"It's been good that we have had different guys step up all season, and tonight Trevor was that guy," Haggerty said.

The Mustangs will take an eight day Christmas holiday break before traveling to play Division I Southern Methodist University on Monday December 29 at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
