KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Texas A&M-Kingsville rallied from deficits in the third and fourth sets to beat Midwestern State 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23 Friday night on Hampton Court.
The loss eliminated the Mustangs from Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament contention as MSU closed the season at 9-20 and 3-13.
Midwestern needed a win and two regular season ending losses by Texas A&M-Commerce to qualify for the No. 8 seed in next week's LSC Postseason Tournament.
Neither happened as Texas A&M-Commerce rolled to a sweep of Eastern New Mexico Friday night in Portales.
Sophomore
Sarah Garfield put down six of her 12 kills to help Midwestern State level match at a set apiece with a 25-19 win in the second frame as the Mustangs limited TAMUK to eight kills and frustrated the Hoggies in the six errors to get back into the match.
The Mustangs rode momentum to take a 21-17 lead late in the third set, but Texas A&M-Kingsville's Ashley Tipps' kill sparked an 8-1 run to allow the Javelinas to take the set, 25-22.
MSU was within three points of forcing a fifth and deciding set after sophomore setter
Sarah Rosinke's service ace gave the Mustangs a 22-19 advantage, but once again TAMUK rattled off a 6-1 run and clinched the win when Brett Zaccardo's service struck the tape and spun over the net on match point.
Junior outside hitter
Hunter Porter paced the Mustangs' attack with 14 kills, while senior
Kat Molloy completed a solid all-around effort with nine kills, nine digs and five total blocks.
Senior defensive specialist
Casey Fletcher led back row efforts with 21 digs.
Senior middle blocker Stephanie Johns had 14 kills and nine blocks to pace Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Javelinas clinched the No. 5 seed with the victory improving to 18-11 on the season and 7-8 in league play.
