Mustangs close out big road trip with 1-0 win at ENMU

PORTALES, N.M. -- No. 23-ranked Midwestern State made good on its shot at redemption taking a 1-0 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field.

"This was a huge, huge road trip with depleted numbers. We had three subs, so we're really proud of how the guys stepped up," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "We got it done and I am really proud of our guys. We knew what we had to do and got it done."

It was the sweet feeling of revenge after Eastern New Mexico claimed its first win in Wichita Falls Monday night, but more importantly it put the Mustangs back in the chase to qualify for the NCAA Division II postseason.

Midwestern now must wait for selection set for Monday, Nov. 10 via a live stream on NCAA.org after finishing the regular season with a 13-3-2 mark.

The Mustangs definitely earned playing without injured starting center backs Kalen Ryden and Call Casarez -- losing both to foot injuries. MSU was also without the services of top goal scorers Andrew Power as the senior midfielder with 12 goals sat out after earning his fifth yellow card in Thursday night win at West Texas A&M.

"Our guys just sucked it up at the end of the game and just played hard on the defensive end even after playing five games in 13 days," Elder said. "We didn't use that as an excuse to give in despite all of our injuries. That's what I am most proud of the guys for."

Junior defender Javan Toledo struck for his second goal of the season off of a Paul Sunderland corner kick service in the 11th minute to provide the match's lone tally. It was Sunderland's team best 10th assist of the season.

It could have been worse for the Greyhounds as MSU outshot ENMU 18-12 while limiting them to three shots on goal.

"We had two goals called back," Elder said. "(Senior forward) Lenny (Smith) challenged the keeper and (freshman forward Thomas) Parides scored on the rebound but it was called back."

Junior forward Albert Rodriguez dominated play working for 11 shots on his own, while junior goalkeeper Nick Petolick made three saves to notch his seventh clean sheet of the season.

"The defense played well getting the shutout today so kudos to the defense," Elder said. "We're excited to keep ourselves alive and see how this plays out."

Eastern New Mexico closes the season at 6-6-3.
