WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Angelo State's Sierra Anderson scored an unassisted goal in the 55th minute to provide the difference in a 1-0 win over Midwestern State Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
"They just out-flanked us in the second half and I needed to do a better job of coaching tonight," MSU coach
Damian Clarke said.
With the loss the Mustangs finished the regular season at 8-5-5 including a 3-5-2 league mark and now need West Texas A&M to defeat Texas Woman's Sunday afternoon in Canyon to gain a berth in the LSC Postseason Tournament.
Angelo State most likely ends up with the No. 2 seed with the winner of Sunday's Texas A&M-Commerce at Eastern New Mexico earning hosting privileges as the league's regular season champion.
In the event of a draw, Texas A&M-Commerce earns the right to host as tri-conference champions with Eastern New Mexico and Angelo State by virtue of a 2-1-1 record in games between the three sides.
Midwestern State had chances in the early going with its best opportunity coming in the 18th minute when freshman
Destinee Williamson got behind the ASU defense and beat the goalkeeper to a through ball. Her shot glanced off of the post.
Minutes later, Anderson appeared to knock in a deflection off of the crossbar, but ASU forward Tiffany Dang was ruled offside to nullify the goal.
"I felt like we outplayed them in the first half and really passed the ball well," Clarke said. "Now we will have to wait and see how things shake out on Sunday."
The Rambelles closed the regular season at 13-3-1 and 6-3-1 in league play.
