WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- It just wasn't the result Midwestern State had in mind Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
 
The Mustangs did extend their unbeaten streak to 10 matches, but Midwestern was forced to settle for a program record tying fifth draw of the season 1-1 with Texas Woman's in Lone Star Conference play.
 
"This one was frustrating because we played well for periods of time, but gave the second half to them after we scored the goal," MSU coach Damian Clarke said. "We still obviously have some maturing to do."
 
MSU moved to 5-0-5 on the season and is unbeaten through 10 games for just the season time in program history and for the first time since the 2009 squad rolled out to a 9-0-2 start.
 
The Mustangs seemed to gain control when sophomore midfielder Lizzie Navarette knocked in her first goal of the campaign in the 51st minute which resulted off senior midfielder Katy Catney's well struck free kick from 45 yards out.
 
Junior defender Alexandria Edwards got to the ball first, but her shot caromed off of the post before Navarette finished it off with a right-footed smash from less than 2 yards out.
 
It seemed to be just what the Mustangs needed playing without the services of junior midfielder Morgan Hannon and junior striker Ashley Cottrell, who exited the match with an injury early in the opening half.
 
"We were without them, but we were good enough that it should have been 3-1 before we started letting (TWU) play," Clarke said. "They had a couple of opportunities to score, but if we would have killed the game like we could have we're not in this spot."
 
Midwestern controlled the run of play throughout the opening 50 minutes, but couldn't turn away a determined TWU effort as the Pioneers outshot the Mustangs 15-6 following intermission.
 
Texas Woman's sophomore Gabriel Larson headed in the equalizer off of Natalia Diaz's serve off of a free kick just outside the box on the right wing in the 82nd minute.
 
The goal ended MSU goalkeeper Courtney Burnette's bid for her seventh shutout, but the redshirt-freshman from Irving made three athletic saves in the second half to finish with eight stops.
 
"We still haven't lost so there is something about this group that is tough. At some point, you have to turn the corner," Clarke said. "We're growing, but it's just not as quick as I wanted it to be. Some of the football we played today was as good as it has been all year. It's finding sustained periods that are a longer than that. It will happen, but it's got to happen sooner than later."
 
Midwestern plays host to Texas A&M-Commerce Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
