DENTON, Texas -- Texas Woman's backed Midwestern State deep into a corner after dealing the Mustangs a 1-0 defeat Sunday afternoon at the TWU Soccer Field.
"We have a lack of consistency," MSU coach
Damian Clarke said. "We played the first 5-7 minutes like they weren't ever going to touch the ball. Then we looked like our energy was sapped."
The loss sends the Mustangs to fifth place in the congested race for the LSC championship with just three matches to play while falling to 7-3-5 on the season and to 2-3-2 in league play.
TWU struck for the lone goal of the match in the 11th minute when Candice Davies banged in her third tally of the season off of a cross Erin Bolinger.
"They scored a really good goal," Clarke said. "They went and hunted and had a good finish. In the end, we got beat by an opportunistic team. They were tough enough to make us struggle. Hats off to Texas Woman's, they went out and earned a win."
Midwestern State produced just eight shot opportunities placing five on frame and worked for just two corner kick chances -- both in the first half of play.
The Mustangs return to the MSU Soccer Field for a pair of games next weekend beginning with West Texas A&M on Friday and LSC leading Eastern New Mexico on Sunday. MSU closes the regular season the following Friday against Angelo State.
MSU needs to make up ground to gain access to the LSC Postseason Tournament set for the weekend of Nov. 8 hosted by the regular season champion. Currently with eight points, the Mustangs trail Eastern New Mexico (12), Texas A&M-Commerce (12), Angelo State (10) and Texas Woman's (10).
"I've got to do a better job coaching and we have to get better," Clarke said.
Texas Woman's improved to 9-5-1 on the season while going to 3-3-1 in LSC play.
