CANYON, Texas -- Freshman Lucy Chalgren's first collegiate goal lifted West Texas A&M to a 2-1 win over Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference play Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.
The Mustangs suffered just their second defeat of the season while falling to 6-2-5 overall, but fell to 1-2-2 in league play.
"It was a winnable game. When it comes down to it, it was probably some coaching errors of not subbing early enough in the second half. I put this one on my shoulders," MSU coach
Damian Clarke said. "The girls battled and played hard. We played pretty hard in the first half and couldn't quite get it going in the second half. We struggled to control our attitude at times. We played with great effort, but sometimes you can't control the outcome."
Chalgren got behind the MSU defense in the 89th minute to tap in the game winner amongst scrum which fell into the goal as the ball hit the back of the net.
"It was a long ball that got played in and was definitely affected by the wind," Clarke said. "The ball was spinning bounced in front of both center backs and bounded over toward the melee in front of the goal. They came out on top of it."
The result soiled another solid showing by MSU freshman striker
Destinee Williamson, who remained active producing a match-high five shots.
She ran onto a through ball served in by junior midfielder
Morgan Hannon in the 23rd minute to beat West Texas A&M goalkeeper Nicole Kemper for her seventh goal of the season to knot the match at 1-1. It was second goal of the weekend as Williamson also found the back of the net in a 2-1 win Friday at Eastern New Mexico.
West Texas A&M senior midfielder Jessie Thomas struck for the first goal of the match on an unassisted score from the top of the box in the 18th minute. The lead would last just five minutes before the teams battled on equal terms into the closing minutes of the contest.
"The game shouldn't have been so close after halftime," Clarke said. "We thought we could open it up, but they made some good adjustments coming out of the half."
The Lady Buffs controlled a slim 10-9 margin in total shots for the game, while MSU held the edge 6-5 in shots on goal but managed just one shot on frame after intermission.
With the win, West Texas A&M added to its early 4-1 lead in the Highway 287 Challenge Cup. WT claimed two points for its victory football and a point each with wins in volleyball and women's soccer. MSU's lone point came courtesy of a 3-2 overtime win in men's soccer Saturday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
Midwestern State commences the second half of Lone Star Conference with a pair of games on the road next weekend. The Mustangs take on Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday before battling Texas Woman's on Sunday.
