Angelo State charges past Mustangs, 83-68

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Midwestern State started off on the wrong foot Wednesday night at Junell Center/Stephens Arena with an administrative technical foul and it just never got better from there.

Angelo State decked the Mustangs for their worst loss in series history 83-68 to send MSU to its second consecutive Lone Star Conference defeat.

"We didn't play very well at all on both ends of the floor, but give Angelo State credit," MSU coach Nelson Haggerty said. "We knew would have to come in here and play very well to win. We need to be able to play every night at a certain level to win basketball games and we didn't do that tonight."

LSC leading scorer Kenny Williams threw in a game-high 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and was a pest on the defensive end of the floor with two steals and two blocks to pace the Rams, who improved to 13-4 and 3-2.

"He made some unbelievable plays, but they had other guys step up for them," Haggerty said. "If they would have made free throws, it would have been a lot worse than it was."

Junior forward Tommy Woolridge came off the bench to splash three consecutive treys late in the first to help ASU break open a close game and push the lead to 32-22 at the 6:16 mark of the first half.

Woolridge and fellow reserve Chantz Chambers contributed 12 points off of the bench as the Rams found openings throughout the night. Angelo State's efficiency resulted in a second-straight 50-percent shooting night by an MSU opponent.

Midwestern State senior forward Eddie D'Haiti stayed hot from the field burying three treys for the second straight game as he finished with a team-high 17 points, pulled down six rebounds and had three steals.

"Eddie was the one bright spot tonight, if we had any," Haggerty said. "He shot the ball well from 3. He made some big rebounds at crucial times, as well."

Senior guard JaMichael Rivers nailed his first shot -- a 3-pointer from the corner -- in his first appearance of the season after suffering a foot injury in exhibition play. He would finish with six points in 17 minutes of court time.

"He was a little rusty, but he was able to make some plays off of the dribble as the game went along," Haggerty said. "That will be really big for us as he works his way back to game speed."

Senior guard Monzaigo Williams failed to reach double figures for the first time this season and didn't score until late in the game, but finish with seven points to match the total of second leading DeJuan Plummer, who also had seven points on 3-of-8 shooting.

Senior forward Xavier Blackburn hauled in eight rebounds as the Mustangs pounded the glass for 15 offensive rebounds and produced a plus-6 rebound margin.

Midwestern State takes on Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
