#22 Midwestern State falls to #19 Colorado Mines, 2-1

AUSTIN -- Colorado Mines senior Tesho Akindele converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute lifted the 19th-ranked Orediggers to a 1-0 win over No. 22 Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.

"It was disappointing. It was crazy," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "It's all about the result, but we played really well and had some good possession."

In an evenly matched game, the teams put up a matching 10 shots placing two on frame with the differencing coming in the 54th minute.

"(Junior defender Sam) Bartek was running them down and he got pushed just as he tackled," Elder said. "He hit (the CSM attacker) just as the guy touched the ball. It was really close to the top of the box."

Akindele struck the penalty kick for his third goal of the weekend to allow the Orediggers to escape with the victory while sending MSU to its first 0-2 start since the 1986 squad dropped matches to Chapman and Truman at the Far West Classic in San Diego. That team recovered to advance to the NAIA National Tournament.

"It was just one of those days," Elder said. "We're struggling and trying to get better everyday. We can't live on the past and people's expectations. We'll just keep working."

The Mustangs dominated the run of play in the second half controlling a 6-3 edge according to the official stat sheet.

"The whole second half was our game and just couldn't score a goal," Elder said. "We missed our opportunities and didn't finish our chances. We are just not capitalizing. We've gone two games and just have a goal from a midfielder. That just can't happen."

Midwestern State hits the road for a pair of games in Colorado next weekend. The Mustangs battle Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday before facing Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday.
