Mustangs fall to No. 1 Barry 5-0 in NCAA Sweet 16

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The outstanding season for the Midwestern State women came to an end Wednesday in the round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships as top-ranked and unbeaten Barry (Fla.) handed the No. 19 Mustangs a 5-0 loss.

MSU fell to 17-7, while Barry advances with a 26-0 record.

"We fought hard to the end," said MSU coach Scott Linn.  "Our ladies played their hearts out and represented MSU so well.  I'm proud of them."

The Mustangs battled hard against the Buccaneers, despite not winning a set.

The closest spots came at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.

MSU's Sarita Adhikary was giving No. 22 Elisabeth Abanda all she could handle at No. 1 singles.  Abanda won the first set 7-5 and Adhikary was up 4-1 when the match was halted.

Freshman Madeline Schorlemmer also was down 7-5 after the first set at No. 4 singles to Karina Goia when play was stopped.

Barry took all three doubles quickly.

Adhikary and Lauren Pineda fell to eighth ranked Abanda and Emma Onila 8-3 at No. 1, while Schorlemmer and Kayla Casey fell at No. 2 to Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker 8-2.  Fatima Clementino and KynZee Watson lost at No. 3 to Goia and Isabela Miro 8-2.

The Bucs won straight set matches at No. 2 and No. 3 to end the match.

Casey lost to Fritschken 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 before Taylor Coffman fell to No. 30 Onila 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot for the clincher.

In the other two unfinished matches, Twelker held a 6-1, 3-2 lead over MSU's Pineda at No. 5, with BU's Akemi Maehama leading Clementino 6-4, 2-1 at No. 6.

"This was a great learning experience for our younger players," said Linn.  "Barry's got a great chance at making a run this year.  They're good."

Linn continued, "This has been a great experience.  The ladies don't want to leave."

The Mustangs women made their third trip to the Sweet 16, its first since 2005.  That year MSU also fell to Barry 5-0.
