WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Angelo State's Dakota Rawls scored 12 points lead the Rams to a shocking 53-50 win over Midwestern State Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
It was the Rams' first road win of the season and first win under the dome since 1988 as ASU moved to 6-18 on the season and to 3-13 in LSC play.
Midwestern State (17-6, 13-3) can clinch an outright league title with a win either over Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday or at Tarleton Sate next Saturday in Stephenville.
It was an uphill battle all night for the Mustangs, who were whistled for 16 first-half turnovers including six on player control fouls. The Rams cashed in the miscues for 19 first half points and led by 15 when Reggie Sutton hit a layup with 1:40 to go as ASU led 34-19 at the intermission.
The Mustangs charged out of the locker room to score the first 13 points of the second half cutting the deficit to 34-32 on a
Corbin Thomas free throw with 12:22 to play.
Free throws proved to be a burden for the Mustangs who connected on 14-of-25 shots from the charity stripe but still managed to fight their way back into the game.
MSU finally claimed its first and only advantage of the contest when Thomas threw down a dunk in transition to give the Mustangs a 46-45 lead with 4:08 to play.
But it was short lived as ASU's Bryan Hammond hit a driving layup to key a 6-0 run for the Rams who re-established a 51-46 edge with 2:33 to go.
The Mustangs did connect on 4-of-6 charity tosses over the final 2:30 of the game to cut the deficit to 51-50 with 56 seconds remaining, but Sutton ended the second half the same as the first with a driving layup 19 seconds to play.
Kevin Grayer's game tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off of the mark.
Thomas paced MSU with 14 points and nine rebounds while Grayer chipped in 13 points and four rebounds and junior guard
Cam Adderley had 11.
