ALAMOSA, Colo. -- Lisa Hampton and
Andrea Carter ripped the nets for 19 points each to lead No. 10-ranked Midwestern State to a 70-57 win over Colorado State-Pueblo Friday afternoon in the Adams Bankers Classic at Plachy Hall.
"It took us a little while to get our gears grinding. I feel like we did a good job of getting into the flow of the game," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "We had some great defensive possessions forcing them into some quick shots because of what we were doing."
The Mustangs rode a hot start by Hampton as the junior from Kennedale hit three treys with MSU clinging to a 35-29 lead at the half.
"Lisa played really well for us," Johnson said. "The girls did a really good job of getting the ball to her. If Lisa is hitting shots, you have to keep feeding her the ball."
The Thunderwolves opened the second half on a 6-0 run to knot the game at 35-35 before Midwestern before Hampton and Carter ignited the MSU attack.
The pair combined for five treys in the second half as the Mustangs extended their lead to a game-high 23 points midway through the period.
"I felt like we were shooting it a little too quick. Once we started hitting some outside shots, it opened up things in the middle," Johnson said. "It was not a perfect game by any stretch because we didn't score very well down the stretch when they switch to a zone."
Junior guard
Dianna Jones pitched in nine points for the Mustangs while senior forward
Skyler Warrick and junior guard
Shatoia Gober pitched eight points apiece.
Colorado State-Pueblo, who posted an 18-9 mark in 2012-13, was paced by junior Katie Nehf's 13-point effort.
Midwestern State closes classic play Saturday night against host Adams State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
