Mustangs, Greyhounds battle to scoreless draw

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Petolick stopped eight shots including a pair of dynamic saves to preserve a scoreless draw as Midwestern State knotted Eastern New Mexico for the second time this season Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

The tie extended the Mustangs unbeaten streak to 11 matches sending the team to 10-3-2 on the season.

"(ENMU) came out and took it to us in the first half," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "Nick came up with some big save for us tonight. He was able to get down and stuff them was unbelievable. He played a very, very good game today. When your keeper can do that, it keeps you in the game."

Petolick's point-blank save of Eastern New Mexico junior midfielder Abayneh Crosby's drive from the middle of the box in the 21st minute highlighted a five-save opening half for the Frisco Wakeland High product.

Eastern New Mexico, who also put a shot off of the crossbar, controlled a 12-9 shot advantage prior to intermission, but still had to survive MSU junior forward Len Smith's header which was saved off of the line in the 16th minute while B.A. Catney's header attempt banged off of the post in the 40th minute.

Midwestern controlled the run of play in the second half limiting the Greyhounds to a pair of shots, but was unable to find any luck with the net on the other end of the pitch.

"We cleaned up some things in the second half. We played with more intensity and passion," Elder said. "I think they got a little tired. They ran hard tonight. Credit to Eastern New Mexico for as hard as they played. This was a whole different team and a whole different mentality from when we played them (in Portales). They had a whole different work rate."

It was Petolick's seventh clean sheet in 10 starts as the NCAA Division II national leader lowered his goals against average to 0.28 and upped his save percentage to .940.

"I was a little disappointed we didn't get the win, but on the other hand we could have lost the game because they had so many chances," Elder said.

Midwestern State closes the regular season with a Senior Day matchup with Houston-Victoria Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
