PORTALES, N.M. -- Midwestern State's senior duo of
Mickey Brown and
Emily Saville paced the Mustangs to a 2-0 win over Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field.
"These are places that are tough to play. These teams are very defensive and organized," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said after improving to 6-0 on the road with wins over ENMU and West Texas A&M over the weekend. "It can be very tough if we don't keep our composure. I feel like we didn't make a lot of mistakes and handled it very well."
The win puts MSU in position to play for a share of the Lone Star Conference title when it takes on league leading Angelo State Friday afternoon in San Angelo. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
"The girls have been focused. This is a team that doesn't get way up or way down. They handle being on the road very well and show a lot of drive," Trimble said. "We're playing with confidence and I'm looking forward to playing Angelo."
The Mustangs improved to 11-4-1 on the season and to 6-2-1 in conference play just a game behind ASU, which pulled out the winning goal in the 86th minute of a 1-0 win at West Texas A&M Sunday in Canyon to improve to 11-3-2 overall and to 7-1-1 in the LSC.
Midwestern can earn the right to host the LSC Postseason Tournament with a 2-goal win over the 'Belles as ASU carries the advantage in the second tiebreaker -- the first being head-to-head -- of goal differential in league play by a +8 to +5 margin for the Mustangs going into the final weekend of play.
The Mustangs looked to their senior to take care of business Sunday against the Zias.
Brown tallied her first goal of the season while making an overlapping run in the game's 17th minute with an assist from Saville.
"Emily received the ball and turned to play it to Ashley (Cottrell)," Trimble said. "Mickey read the play and made the run and ran on to the ball behind Ashley. She made two touches and hammered the ball in."
The Mustangs put the match away in the 56th minute courtesy of an opportunistic goal by Saville.
Sophomore midfielder
Morgan Hannon took on four defenders and carried the ball 45 yards before colliding with an ENMU defender near the top of the box. The ball squirted away to an open Saville, who banged it into the upper right corner of the net to give MSU a commanding 2-0 lead.
That provided more than enough room for error for senior goalkeeper
Kallie Essary, who made three saves to preserve her seventh shutout of the season and fourth in the last five games.
