Wallace, Olivares deilver career bests in 3-2 loss to Dallas Baptist

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State received career-best performances from Caitlin Wallace and Marissa Olivares, but it wasn't enough Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Dallas Baptist rode the tandem of Erika Papadeas and Tadam Mergener to outlast the Mustangs 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10 to even its season record at 11-11.

The defeat was the Mustangs' fifth consecutive loss under the dome as MSU dropped to 11-9 on the season.

Wallace was masterful in the loss as the senior from Amarillo recorded 20 kills with four attack errors in 33 attempts which was good for an impressive .485 hitting percentage. The middle blocker also produced a match-high five total blocks to go along with five digs.

Olivares notched her first collegiate double-double as the sophomore from Sachse covered the floor for an MSU season-high 32 digs and was in on two blocks. She was also solid on the offensive joining Wallace in double figures with 12 kills while committing just three errors in 39 attacks (.231).

The teams alternated winning sets as the Patriots rolled to wins in the first and third frames while MSU forced the deciding set with narrow victories in the second and fourth frames. The teams were separated by no more than five points in any of the stanzas.

The Mustangs rolled out to a 4-0 lead on the strength of a solo block from Marija Jovanovic then she combined on a block with Wallace to force a DBU timeout.

The Patriots rallied to win four of the next five points and knotted the score at 5-5 on a Mergener kill.

DBU rattled off of a 5-1 run later in the set to take an 11-8 lead after the Mustangs committed three consecutive attack miscues allowing the Patriots to seize control of the match.

Dallas Baptist would take the final three points of the frame keyed by Taira Iwegbu and Krystal Wunderlich before closing the match on an MSU ball handle error.

Papadeas closed the match with 17 kills while Mergener added 15 to account for approximately half of DBU's offensive output, while Cameron Hartson joined Papadeas with 19 digs each to pace back row play.

MSU senior Beatriz Villalba had nine kills through the first three frames, while junior Kaitlyn Molloy added seven kills with a single error in 20 attacks (.300).

Freshman setter Sarah Rosinke delivered a solid effort with 29 assists and a .403 set percentage to go along with seven digs while Alyssa Fulgium had 24 assists and five digs.

Junior libero Casey Fletcher had 17 digs and Madelyn Johnson added 10 to support back row efforts.

Midwestern State continues its home stand by taking on Lone Star Conference foe Tarleton State Friday night at 5:30 p.m. before facing No. 19 Angelo State Saturday at 2 p.m.
