Mustangs battle Eastern New Mexico to 1-1 draw

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State senior Emily Saville notched her first goal of the campaign to help the Mustangs to a 1-1 draw with Eastern New Mexico Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

The tie snapped a three-match winning streak for the Mustangs, who moved to 7-3-1 and to 2-1-1 in Lone Star Conference just two points off the pace of Angelo State. The Rambelles improved to 3-1 with a 2-1 win over West Texas A&M Friday night in San Angelo.

"It wasn't the result we wanted tonight, but we played extremely well," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We had some lapses and Eastern New Mexico is a good team. They took advantage of their opportunities and they had a couple of more."

The Mustangs drew first blood in the 51st minute as Ashley Cottrell gained possession of the ball in the offensive third before tangling with an ENMU defender with both going to the ground.

Senior midfielder Tatyanny Griffiths ran on to the ball and slipped a pass to Saville, who beat Eastern New Mexico keeper Alyxandra Ortiz with a hard shot to the upper third of the net.

"Emily has stepped up and she's been playing good soccer, but has been rushing her shot a little bit," Trimble said. "She has a real good shot and is really composed. Emily relaxed herself and got a good shot off."

The Zias (4-4-3, 1-1-2) struck for the equalizer on a misclear in the 79th minute as Maurisa Jones tapped in a loose ball in the center of the box to knot the match at 1-1.

The Mustangs received a lift from sophomore Kensli Pounds as the speedy outside midfielder made a return from a leg injury.

"She kept telling me she was fine so we used in overtime," Trimble said. "I didn't think we were going to be able to count her but she told me in warm-ups that she felt good and she was ready to go."

Pounds created some outstanding opportunities for the Mustangs as her sever from 25 yards out caromed off of the far post barely eluding a pair of MSU players crashing the goal in the 83rd minute.

Pounds worked free for a pair of shots in the second overtime, but Saville provided the best scoring chance in extra time when her header off of a corner kick by Carina Dunnahoo six minutes into the first overtime period.

"When both teams were able to collect the ball, possess it and get their attack going, they were extremely dangerous," Trimble said. "That made for a really exciting game."

Midwestern State controlled a 25-8 edge in shots while placing 12 on frame.

The Mustangs take on West Texas A&M Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
