TYLER, Texas – The 30th ranked Midwestern State men split a pair against nationally-ranked teams Saturday in a one-day, two-match swing into East Texas.
The Mustangs (5-3) opened the day with a 7-1 loss to Tyler Junior College, the No. 2 team in the NJCAA, and finished with a 6-3 triumph over Texas-Tyler, ranked No. 30 in NCAA Division III.
The Mustangs return to action next Saturday, starting a spring break swing in the Southeast by facing NAIA power William Carey in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Playing a man down, the Mustangs defaulted a point in both doubles and singles to the NJCAA's number two Apaches. Still, the Mustangs split the remaining doubles in the match.
MSU's
Jarrod Liston and
Tomas Grejtak, playing at No. 1, beat Matt Campbell and Vasili Caripi 8-6. However, the MSU No. 2 team of Rory deBoer and
Colby Meeks suffered an 8-6 set back to Tassilo Schmid and Adam Taylor.
The Mustangs were swept in singles by Tyler, taking only one position to three sets.
At No. 4 singles, Grejtak took the first set from Javier Perez 6-1, but Perez came back to claim the next two 6-1, 6-2 and take the point.
Meeks, playing at No. 1, lost to Luis Vivas 7-5, 6-4, with deBoer falling to Campbell at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-4.
Liston fell to Schmid at the third position 6-3, 6-1, while
Jay Henton lost to Rother 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5.

The Mustangs roared out of the gate to sweep the doubles points as they handed UT-Tyler a 6-3 loss.

Ryan Spencer and Kevin Singer 8-4 at No. 1 to start off the match.
Luke Joyce teamed with
Colby Meeks at No. 2 to beat Rob Hodous and Kevin Wright 8-6, while Rory deBoer and
Jay Henton downed Edward Timponi and Morgan Graham 8-6.
The Mustangs defaulted the No. 6 singles to the Patriots, then claimed three of the five points to win the match.
Meeks picked up his second win in the match by taking the No. 1 singles over Singer 6-2, 6-4, while Liston downed Timponi at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3.
Grejtak completed the scoring for MSU winning at No. 4 over Drew Reid 7-6(4), 6-1.
MSU's deBoer fell at No. 2 to Wright 6-4, 6-4, with Henton losing at No. 5 to Doug Kierstead 6-4, 6-2.
