Mustangs rally past Incarnate Word in seventh, 3-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Incarnate Word 3-2 Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park ending the longest losing streak in program history.

The Mustangs snapped a six-game skid to improve to 13-16 on the season and to 3-7 in Lone Star Conference play while UIW slipped to 17-10 and 5-5.

Sophomore designated player Courtney Ford launched an opposite solo home run to breakup Incarnate Word starter Briana Sanchez's shutout bid with one out in the seventh to start the MSU rally.

Junior first baseman Christina Roosmalen lined a single to center field before Sanchez struck out Carey Campbell swinging for the second out of the frame.

But Campbell had kept MSU within striking distance by spearing Kim Hanson's line drive destined for right field for the final out in the top of the seventh with two runners on.

Junior outfield Courtney Bingham worked the count for a walk before Elena Bennett lofted a single down the left-field line to plate the tying run.

Senior third baseman Mallory Mooney, who paced the Mustangs' 8-hit attack by going 2-for-3, drilled the next pitch for a single to left field to plate Bingham with the winning run.

Lindsi Glenn permitted a pair of unearned runs as the Mustangs committed three errors in the first innings before settling in to improve to 12-8 in the circle. The frosh from Healdton, Okla. allowed nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Sanchez took the loss for the Cardinals to fall to 11-5. The LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year allowed three runs - all earned - on eight hits while striking out five and walking two in 6 2/3 innings.

Midwestern State had posted losing streaks of five games in 2004, 2005 and 2008.

The teams close the three-game set with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for noon.
