WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 11 Midwestern State just continues to prove no matter the circumstances, the Mustangs has what it takes to win.
The Mustangs overcame a 7-point deficit with four minutes left in regulation to claim a 66-60 win over West Texas A&M in overtime Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
It was the third this season that MSU trailed by more than 10 points in the second half and - once again - the Mustangs came through with the victory to improve to 13-0 on the season and to 6-0 in Lone Star Conference play.
The start is the second best in school history trailing just the 2009-10 squad which started the season with 14 straight wins.
DeJuan Plummer was the unlikely hero in regulation as the junior guard started the comeback with a driving layup after a pair of Kennon Washington free throws staked the Buffs to a 52-45 lead with 4:00 left.
Then Plummer stepped into a 3-pointer from the left wing to cap a 10-2 lead and give the Mustangs their first lead of the night at 55-54 with 75 seconds remaining.
The teams exchanged stops before MSU senior guard
Michael Loyd was whistled for a touch foul with 4.7 seconds to play. West Texas A&M's Lionel Foster, who logged 10 points and nine assists, hit just one of two charity tosses to send the game to overtime knotted at 55-55.
The Mustangs never trailed in overtime which highlighted a pair of clutch 3-pointers from
Michael Loyd and
JaMichael Rivers.
Rivers paced the Mustangs with 16 points, while senior forward
David Terrell added 12 points and nine rebounds before fouling ut in 20 minutes. Terrell was also a force on the defensive end with four blocked shots and two steals.
Courtney Carr had 13 points to lead West Texas A&M which fell to 11-3 and 5-2.
Midwestern State returns to action Saturday afternoon at Eastern New Mexico. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
