AUSTIN -
VcMor Eligwe tallied two second-half goals to lift No. 3 Midwestern State to a 2-0 result over St. Edward's (Texas) Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Field.
"Everyone is giving us their best game," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "When you're not that experienced and missing key players, it's hard to overcome that. It was huge that VcMor broke out of his slump today."
Eligwe, who paced the Mustangs with 10 goals last season, staked the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute off of a
David Freeland assist.
"We felt like we could attack them on the left side so we inserted Freeland at right mid," Elder said. "He got behind them and served a great ball to VcMor who buried it."
Eligwe then put the game away with a breakaway tally in the 86th minute.
"He was able to beat the SEU player to the ball off of a clear," Elder said. "He faked and a shot dribble around the goalkeeper."
All of the scoring came after St. Edward's senior defender Bryan Booth booked an ejection for going through MSU senior midfielder
Dean Lovegrove in the 63rd minute.
"It was a vicious tackle," Elder said. "Teams are playing us very physically, but that cost them.
Midwestern State outshot the Hilltoppers (3-2) by a 16-10 margin including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
"It helped that they got a red card," Elder said. "That changed momentum, but we persevered and kept on working."
The Mustangs, who improved to 4-1 on the season, close a five-game road stretch at Texas-Permian Basin on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
