LAWTON, Okla. - No. 30 Midwestern State allowed its chances to get away Tuesday afternoon against No. 18 Cameron in the NCAA Division II Round of 16.
And the Aggies (18-7) took full advantage to claim a 5-3 win to advance to the NCAA II Championship field against Barry (Fla.) on May 14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
That could of easily have been Midwestern State making its first appearance in the Round of 16 since 2005, but it was not meant to be.
The Mustangs battled to a 2-1 advantage through doubles at the Cameron Tennis Center, but allowed Cameron's No. 1 duo of Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber to overcome a 4-1 deficit to claim a 9-7 win over MSU's top doubles team of
Rozike Janzen van Rensburg and
Alex Odell-Michels.
MSU claimed comfortable wins at the other two doubles' positions as
Leah Roberts and
Abbie Lewis beat Sara Londono and Elle Scholles 8-2 at No. 2 and
Lindsey Holcomb and
Ashley Huse defeated Antonia Moberg and Florencio Tornero 8-3 at No. 3.
Holcomb made quick work of Cameron's Antonia Moberg 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to give the Mustangs' a fifth win, but the Aggies retaliated with straight-set victories with Amanda Moberg beating van Rensburg 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, Scholles upended Roberts 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 and Tornero defeated Huse 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
That set up the clinching match as Londono edged Lewis 7-6, 7-6 at No. 4.
The Mustangs were up in the final unfinished match on the court as Odell-Michels had a 7-5, 5-7, 4-0 edge on Packhaber at No. 2.
Midwestern State returns five players for 2011-12 from a team that advanced to the NCAA Division postseason for the second consecutive year and for the 12th time in 14 seasons.
MSU closes the season at 17-9.
