No. 5 Midwestern State wins South Central Regional One

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State freshman catcher Kim Jerrick smashed a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to power the fifth ranked Mustangs to a 5-2 victory over No. 21 Angelo State to win the NCAA Division II South Central Regional One Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Midwestern (50-11) had to rally after losing the first game of the day to the Belles 7-4 to force the contest. Angelo State (45-14) saw its season come to a close.

Jerrick broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth when clobbered a 1-0 delivery from ASU starter Clarissa Molina over the fence in left against the wind to plate the first runs in the game and give MSU a lead it would not relinquish.

Midwestern added two more runs in the fifth when Mallory Mooney doubled to the fence in right center to plate McKenzie Sickler and Brittney Tanner.

"We definitely had a fight on our hands," said MSU Coach Brady Tigert. "I can't say enough about Kristina (Gutierrez). I'm really, really proud of her. She did a great job."

ASU countered with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth after a single and an error put a pair of runners on. Kaycee Taylor got the third hit of the day against MSU starter Kristina Gutierrez that scored Morgan Spearman, followed by a single by Elsa Apo that drove in Chelsey Walters.

But the Mustangs answered by bringing in Tanner to the circle for relief and she shut down the Belles for the last inning and a third.

"We just needed to make a change, it wasn't that G was tired," explained Tigert. "ASU picked up some momentum and I wanted to change it right then."

Gutierrez (21-4) got the win, striking out five and walking two in the contest. Tanner picked up her third save of the season. Molina (23-8) was handed the loss for ASU.

The Mustangs advance to host the South Central Super Regional next Friday and Saturday against South Central Regional Two winner West Texas A&M. Friday's first game is set for 5 p.m., with Saturday's second contest at 1 p.m. An if necessary would be next Saturday at 3:30.
