Buffalo slayers! MSU completes unbeaten regular season

CANYON, Texas - No. 2 Midwestern State used two second half goal to propel the Mustangs to a 2-1 Lone Star Conference win over West Texas A&M Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.

With the win, MSU completed the second unbeaten season in school history at 16-0-2.

"I'm proud of the boys," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "They came in and showed a lot of resolve. It's hard to go 18 games and keep everyone healthy."

The Mustangs withheld starters Paulo Teixeira and Ryan Spence in the opening and went down another starter when goalkeeper Raul Herrera collided with Jack Robertson in the seventh minute.

"We were concerned about keeping everyone healthy," Elder said. "After Raul went down, I wanted to pull everyone."

The Buffs took advantage as Martin Fuentes scored on an assist from Alfredo Chavez to take a 1-0 lead.

"Raul suffered a really bad bruise on his shin," Elder said."But Woody (Michael Wood) did a good job and played well."

Wood made two saves in 84 minutes of play between the posts and earned his second career win at MSU as the Mustangs came on strong in the second half.

Teixeira took a quick restart from Dean Lovegrove in the 68th minute to net the equalizer in the 68th minute before freshman VcMor Eligwe collected a loose ball off of a scrum from a corner kick to bury his team-high 10th goal of the season for the winner in the 78th minute.

"What these kids did was very special," Elder said. "I am so proud of them. They just won't quit."

Midwestern State will likely qualify for its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II postseason berth as the No. 1 seed out of the South Central Region. In that scenario, the Mustangs will play host to the No. 2 seed Thursday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

The NCAA Division II Postseason Selection Show is set for Monday night at 6 p.m. via a video stream from NCAA.com. A public viewing party is set for MSU's men's and women's soccer teams at Buffalo Wild Wings.
