COMMERCE, Texas - Midwestern State got just effort it needed to its road woes Thursday night at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
The Mustangs got career-best efforts from
Aqueelah Watkins and
Breeanna Brown to take a 78-64 Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Commerce.
The ended a seven-game skid for Midwestern away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum as the Mustangs won their first road contest since claiming a 64-59 win over Eastern New Mexico last season in Portales. The Mustangs improved to 5-7 on the season.
"It's extremely important to gain the confidence to win on the road," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "The credit goes to the girls for being aggressive and executing well tonight."
Watkins worked the paint to pour in 20 points and led the squad with seven rebounds, while Brown found space with dribble penetration to net 16 points and pulled in four rebounds.
"Brownie and Q (Watkins) were our spark tonight," Johnson said. "They set the tone in transition early on and gave us a great lift."
Midwestern turned in their second-best shooting night as a team at 53.8 percent as it was just the second time this season the Mustangs shot better than 50 percent.

Savannah Carver hit a pair of free throws with 16:36 to play and main
Midwestern maintained a 10-point lead throughout the second half, but really took command of the game with an early spurt.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 11-2 lead after
Breeanna Brown converted a layup at the 13:16 left before intermission.
MSU kept the Lions off of the scoreboard for the opening 5:30 of the contest until a Mattilyn McIntyre layup broke the ice to make the score 4-2.
The Mustangs would score the next four points, then used a 9-2 run later in the half to push the advantage to 22-6 on a Brown layup with 10:53 to go unitl halftime.
MSU would lead by as many as 18 in the first half.
Carver finished with 12 points and matched a season-high with seven rebounds, while
Jazman Patterson scored 11 points and grabbed five board off of the bench.
McIntyre paced Texas A&M-Commerce with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting as the Lions slipped to 3-8 on the season.
Midwestern State concludes its current three-game road swing Saturday afternoon at Texas Woman's University. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. from Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
