WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Much work remains to be accomplished for 12th-ranked Midwestern State.
The Mustangs might have started realizing their potential Sunday afternoon as
Nick Auditore and
Bryan Sajjadi netted two goals each to lead MSU to a 5-0 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico at the MSU Soccer Field.
"They played a drop-back defense against us and we were able to throw a lot of numbers forward and finally finished," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "All of our strikers played very well today."
Auditore, a senior striker, kick started the Mustangs by finishing a nice a combo in the center of the pitch as junior center mid
Paulo Teixeira threaded a through ball to Auditore's feet in the 18th minute.
Auditore made one touch, and then banged it off of the far post and past the Eastern New Mexico keeper.
The Greyhounds (5-2-1) continued to pack it and the Mustangs kept throwing numbers forward.
Once again, Auditore was the benefactor in the 26th minute.
Sophomore striker
Tex McCullough put a throw-in into the center of the box and junior 6-4 defender
Allen Thomson used his size advantage to head a deflection toward a sliding Auditore, who deposited his fifth goal of the season to push the Mustangs advantage to 2-0.
The Mustangs stayed on the attack to push the advantage to 3-0 in the 33rd minute when
Landon Fruge' fed Sajjadi for his first goal of the contest from the touch line.
Paulo Teixeira added an unassisted goal at the open of the second half and Sajjadi notched his second goal on a header off of
Dean Lovegrove serve on a corner kick in the 76th minute.
Midwestern appeared to tally another score in the 84th minute when Lovegrove delivered a nicely struck through ball over the top to an oncoming
Kyle Kmiec.
Kmiec beat ENMU keeper Alistar Caldwell to the ball and poked it into the net, but the tally was overruled and Kmiec was issued a yellow card for allegedly going spikes up into Caldwell, who suffered an apparent leg injury on the play.
Elder and Eastern New Mexico coach Harold Munoz agreed to end the contest at that point.
The win extended MSU's unbeaten streak at the MSU Soccer Field to 14 and the shutout was the Mustangs' fifth in a row.
"We're not allowing a lot of shots," Elder said. "We're really covering for each other well now and learning to drop back, but we're not there yet as a team."
Midwestern, which improved to 6-1-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference play, plays host to Texas A&M International Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
