CANYON, Texas - No. 7 West Texas A&M took advantage of a restart in the 72nd minute to score the lone goal in its Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championships semifinal 1-0 win over Midwestern State Friday afternoon at The Pitch.
The Buffs (14-2-2) advance to face Central Oklahoma in the conference finals Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
"It was a very physical game and WT played very well," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "The officiating allowed the game to get to the physicality that it did and that was not to our advantage."
Center referee Aric Bonner called a delayed foul on MSU junior midfielder
Brandy O'Neal for an apparent slide tackle just past the mid line in the Mustangs offensive zone.
O'Neal appeared to have made contact and gained control of the ball, but was whistled for the foul and was booked with a subsequent yellow card as West Texas A&M was given a free kick about 10 yards into the Lady Buffs offensive zone.
Samantha Garland drove a beautiful ball into the center of the box which was headed into the goal by Melissa Carnero for the only goal of the contest.
"We did a good job of holding them off in the first half," Trimble said. "Mallory (Whitworth) played outstanding."
Whitworth, a freshman keeper from McKinney, made five saves to keep the Mustangs in the contest.
Midwestern State, which fell to 13-5-2, must wait for an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II national tournament. The tournament field is set to be announced Monday night at 6 p.m. on a live Web cast on NCAA.com.
The Lady Buffs outshot MSU 12-3 and owned a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
