Pritchard lifts No. 10 MSU to 1-0 win over Texas A&M-Commerce

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The crowd erupted and half the bench whipped past Midwestern State coach Jeff Trimble Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

"What happened?" he asked his assistant coaches before making the realization. "Did that really go in?"

Sophomore Lindsay Pritchard collected a carom to the left corner and banged in the game winner in the 96th minute to lift the 10th-ranked Mustangs to 1-0 overtime win over Texas A&M-Commerce.

The goal allowed Midwestern State to extend its regular season unbeaten streak to 17 matches, while improving to 8-0-2 on the season and 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play.

"I'm proud of the girls," Trimble said. "That was the best we've played this year. Both teams had quality chances. It was just a matter of who was going to convert one of them."

Fortunately, it was the Mustangs on a situation created by the hustle of junior midfielder Brandy O'Neal, who raced into the box to beat Texas A&M-Commerce keeper Taylor Jordan to a through ball.

The ball glanced off of Jordan's and appeared to be heading out by the touch line.

Pritchard beat the defender to the ball and celebrated her 20th birthday with her team-leading fifth goal of the season and second game winner of the campaign.

But it was MSU's strong defensive play which allowed the Mustangs to extend the match into the extra period.

"We played a strong first half, but they (Texas A&M-Commerce) really dictated play in the second half," Trimble said. "Kat (Bernick) and Jaime (Pompey) really stepped and played well."

The Mustangs also got another stellar performance out of the goalkeeper combo of Ashley Meek and Mallory Whitworth to clinch a school-record sixth-straight shutout.

The duo combined for seven saves, including a Whitworth's athletic save of Lion midfielder Devon Herrman's header in the 61st minute while scrambling backwards of a scrum in the box.

Herrman was Texas A&M-Commerce's most active player taking 11 shots and putting five on frame as most were balls won in the air on the Lions' nine corner kick opportunities.

Pritchard and O'Neal combined on a serve to sophomore Kelsey Hill to give the Mustangs their best chance in regulation on a counter attack in the 83rd minute, but Jordan was up to the task for one of her seven saves.

Midwestern State plays host to Northeastern State Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

Texas A&M-Commerce, who advanced the NCAA Division South Central Region finals last season, fell to 6-4 and 1-1.
