JOPLIN, Mo. – Midwestern State used a crucial service rally by
Jessica Ransom to reel off six-straight points to seal a comeback win in the second set then held on for its sixth-straight three-set win with a 25-16, 26-24, 25-22 win over Northwest Missouri State Friday night in the Missouri Southern Invitational at Young Gymnasium.
The Mustangs, who improved to 6-0, were on the verge of dropping their first set of the season after a Rachel Nisi kill gave Northwestern game point at 24-20 in the second set.
But Ransom answered with a kill and went on a five-point service run to allow MSU to come away with a 26-24 win and a two-set advantage in the match after taking the first set, 25-16.
Ransom, a reigning Lone Star Conference offensive player of the week, delivered a great all-around match as the senior outside hitter from Wichita Falls paced the Mustangs with 15 kills and made just one error in 25 attacks to hit .560 and added six digs.
Freshman middle blocker
Miranda Byrd added 11 kills, while junior
Alysha Pritt added nine.
Allison Schreiber directed the .292 team attack with 43 assists and added five digs.
Senior libero
Shay Velasquez continued her stellar play on the back row with 21 of the Mustangs' 41 digs to follow a 26-dig performance against Drury on Friday morning.
Midwestern State closes the invitational with matches Saturday with matches against Missouri Southern at 10 a.m. and Dallas Baptist at 1 p.m.
Northwest Missouri fell to 2-4.
