SALISBURY, N.C. – Midwestern State's search for a go-to hitter was answered in short order as the Mustangs rolled to a 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 win over Lenoir Rhyne College Saturday afternoon in the Catawba College Invitational at Goodman Gym.
Jessica Ransom capped a stellar weekend of play by leading the MSU attack with 13 kills while committing one error in 20 attempts for a .600 kill rate.
"She reads the block well and has a great swing," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "She could be one the best hitters in the conference. Hopefully, this is a precursor to what she will do the rest of the season."
Ransom, a 6-0 senior from Wichita Falls, was nearly flawless during the Mustangs' four matches in the Catawba Invitational.
She needed just 50 attack attempts to compile 30 kills while committing just two errors to hit a stellar .560 over the weekend.
Senior setter
Allison Schreiber had a great all-around performance as she directed the squad to a team attack percentage of .300 in the finale against Lenoir-Rhyne, but also added three kills and seven digs.
Senior libero
Shay Velasquez added 10 digs as the Mustangs improved to 4-0 for the first time school history.
"It's a good foundation to the season," Flores-Stafford said. "Starting 4-0 is a great confidence booster."
Midwestern State will enjoy a week off before heading to Joplin, Mo. to compete in the Missouri Southern Invitational.
The Mustangs battle Drury and Northwest Missouri State on Friday before closing the tournament with matches against Missouri Southern and Dallas Baptist on Saturday.
