Mustangs knock off No.12 Tarleton State, 79-65

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Midwestern State is making a habit of foiling Tarleton State on its home floor.

The Mustangs ended the Texans' 31-game home winning streak last season.

Midwestern was at it again Saturday as it used a strong team effort to hand No. 12 Tarleton a 79-65 loss again at Wisdom Gym.

The loss ended the Texans' fourth longest winning streak in school history and knocked them from the undefeated ranks during Lone Star Conference South Division.

No team has ran the table in divisional play since the LSC adopted the format in 1998.

"We've been pretty good here," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "They've got a great team, so you really have to take the hats off to our guys."

The Mustangs are now 34-16 all-time against the Texans and have won 13 of the 20 games between the schools in Stephenville.

There was no doubt Saturday night as the Texans scored the first basket 1:21 into the first half. They would never lead again.

Nolan Richardson IV and Jeremy Ford paced the Mustangs with 18 points apiece as each of them provided a push in different halves.

Richardson hit three of his four 3-pointers in the final five minutes of the first half as the Mustangs took a 33-23 lead into the intermission.

It was the Ford show in the second half as the senior guard from Wagoner, Okla. scored 15 second-half points to allow the Mustangs to maintain a double-digit lead through much of the closing half.

"Ford controlled the tempo and hit some big shots," Ray said.

Ford fueled an 11-3 MSU run with a pair of treys after the Texans climbed to within 38-35 on a Limar Wilson jumper with 16:25 to go.

The Texans never got within seven the rest of the way as the Mustangs led by as many 18 in the closing minutes despite fighting foul trouble.

Trajinski Grigsby and Charlie Logan gave strong effort despite fouling out in 17 minutes of action.

"We knew we had to use fouls and be and be physical," Ray said. "We knew as big as they were, we were going to have to foul."

The Texans flexed their inside muscle as Terrence Gamble, a 6-11 senior center, paced Tarleton with 15 points and snagged 12 rebounds and Eric Williams, a 6-6 junior forward, added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The win improves the Mustangs to 11-10 on the season, but more importantly moves them into a tie for fourth place in the LSC South with Angelo State at 3-4 after Rams lost to West Texas A&M 84-78 Saturday night in San Angelo.

Tarleton State dropped to 19-3 and 6-1.

Midwestern State plays host to West Texas A&M Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
