Renz, Pioneers bowl over Midwestern 62-49

DENTON, Texas – Texas Woman's University's Renee Renz poured in a season high 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Pioneers rolled to a 62-49 win over Midwestern State Wednesday night at Kitty Magee Arena.

"We didn't shoot the ball well, didn't play good defense and we didn't always agree with the calls," MSU coach Shannon Burks said. "That just about sums up the night."

Renz was allowed to exploit Midwestern State's game plan to run two players at the junior transfer post from Arkansas-Little Rock as Tiffany Cook fouled out after playing just 11 minutes at the 14:22 mark of the second half.

Cook, who had scored 22 and 19 points in her previous two games, was limited to three points, but did manage seven rebounds as the Mustangs continued to be without leading scorer Brandy Moore, who was out with the flu.

"Renz is a good player and we didn't execute defensively very well with what we'd planned," Burks said. "(The way the game was called) made it real tough on us in there."

The Mustangs, who have had also had a tough time on the road over the last month, dropped their fourth-straight game as the visitor to fall to 9-11 on the season and 3-4 in the Lone Star Conference South Division.

MSU hasn't won in the opposition's gym since beating East Central in Ada on Jan. 10 and is 2-8 away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum this season.

"We have a phobia of the road," Burks said. "We haven't played very well on the road and sure haven't shot it well."

The Mustangs connected on 26.2 percent of their shots, including a 3-for-11 effort from 3-point range as the Pioneers were able to build a 35-25 halftime advantage and extended the lead to as many as 21 with 13 minutes to play.

"I didn't think the effort was bad at all, but we didn't execute the game plan or shoot the ball very well," Burks said.

The Mustangs fought for 23 offensive rebounds, but were still outscored in second-chance points 16-15 as Texas Woman's had 20 offensive boards of its own.

The Pioneers were also able to take advantage of 15 MSU turnovers as TWU owned a 21-6 advantage in points off of miscues.

Senior guard Stacey Staten paced the Mustangs with 17 points, while senior forward Brittni Morrison added 13 points, eight rebounds and hit three 3-pointers.

Senior guard Kaylon Hodge led Midwestern State with 10 rebounds while scoring six points and dishing out a team-high four assists.

TWU's Savannah Thompson joined Renz in double figures for the Pioneers with 14 points and added six rebounds.

The Mustangs take on Tarleton State Saturday night in Stephenville. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
