Richardson wills Mustangs to 70-67 overtime win over Texas A&M-Commerce

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The architects of "Dome Magic" were attendance Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

But the current model of the Midwestern State Mustangs led by a career-best 34-point outburst by Nolan Richardson proved the magic lives as the senior guard splashed in six points in the final 11 seconds of overtime to lift MSU to a 70-67 win over Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Lions, who fell to 4-5 on the season, quelled Richardson's regulation heroics after Cardell Hunter converted each of his three free throws after he was fouled on a last gasp 3-point attempt with two seconds remaining.

Richardson had put the Mustangs up 59-56 with six seconds to play when he completed a traditional three-point play with the aid of goal tend by Texas A&M-Commerce forward Ronnie Morgan.

Texas A&M-Commerce scored the first seven points in overtime before Richardson canned a pull-up jumper to get the Mustangs within 66-61 with 1:46 remaining.

The Lions, who were held without a field goal for the final 4:27 in overtime, produced just one more point the rest of the way courtesy of a Hunter free throw with 1:12 to go.

But Midwestern junior guard Phillip Homere hit a trey from the right wing with 59 seconds to play before Richardson was fouled in the act of shooting a 3-pointer by Texas A&M-Commerce's Deundrae Spraggins with 11 seconds remaining.

Richardson calmly sank each of the ensuing three free throws before Spraggins turned the ball back over to the Mustangs in the backcourt with six seconds left.

Once again, it was Richardson who took center stage with a step-back trey from the left wing as time expired.

The Tulsa native finished the night by going 9-of-19 from the field including a 14-of-16 effort from the free-throw line, while junior guard Craig Green added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Junior forward Michael Godwin turned in a great all-around effort with seven points to go with a game-high 14 rebounds, four blocks and three steals.

Former MSU greats Isaac Devore, Leroy Shaw and Jesse King were among the former alums in attendance Wednesday. The trio was part of squads that won 70-straight games at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, advanced to four NAIA national tournaments including a national finalist appearance in 1975.

The Mustangs compete in the River City Classic hosted by St. Mary's University and will tipoff against Northwest Missouri State Saturday afternoon at 12:45 p.m.
