Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Buffs get restarted to upset #1 Midwestern State, 3-2

CANYON, Texas – No. 1 Midwestern State was in control with a two-goal lead Sunday afternoon at the The Pitch in Canyon.

But West Texas A&M used three restarts to erase the Mustangs' 15-game win streak and perfect run through the Southwest Soccer Conference by taking a 3-2 win over MSU in double overtime.

"We had some chances in the run of play to bury them and we didn't," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "They are bigger and we just didn't defend well on restarts. In the run of play, they didn't really didn't do anything."

After the game went scoreless to intermission, the Mustangs opened a two-goal lead in just a matter of minutes.

Senior midfield Ahmad Ihmeidan converted his fourth penalty kick of the season in the 48th minute after West Texas A&M was whistled for a hand box in the box, then Craig Sutherland whipped around the Buffs' defense in the 78th minute to launch a perfect serve to Nick Auditore who headed it in from 4 yards out.

It was then that West Texas A&M got its first lift off of a restart.

Itamar Keinan headed in Tommy Nutter's corner kick to pull the Buffs within 2-1 in the 78th minute.

"When we were up 2-0, the game seemed over," Elder said. "All of the sudden, they score on the corner kick to get new life."

Five minutes later, the Buffaloes took advantage of a throw-in opportunity as Ben Everson notched the equalizer with 7:53 remaining in regulation.

Then, in the second overtime WT's Austin Ridling drove a free kick in the box to Keinan, who buried the game winner to touch off a 20-minute celebration by the Buffaloes.

It was the second-straight season West Texas A&M dealt the Mustangs a loss in the regular season finale as the Buffs claimed a portion of the SSC title in 2007.

This season, the Mustangs, who close the regular season at 17-1 overall and 7-1 in the SSC, had the outright championship clinched and will likely host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division II Championship tournament next weekend in Wichita Falls.

West Texas A&M, which closed the season at 12-5 and 6-2, came into the week on the outside looking in to the NCAA II South Central Regional Rankings. The top two teams in the rankings advanced to the NCAA postseason.
