WICHITA FALLS, Texas – When the going got tough for Midwestern State Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, the Mustangs turned up the defense to claim a 23-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-12 win over Angelo State.
"Our defense was huge," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "Our blocking really got us through at the end of match when we really started getting the timing of the hitter."
Sesley Graves led the MSU block party by setting a school record with 11 total blocks as the Mustangs finished with 14 total team blocks, but the junior from Wichita Falls got plenty of help.
Whitney Maxwell added seven blocks and
Hillary White had three as the Mustangs finished with three solo blocks and 22 assisted blocks.
It was Maxwell who ran off six-straight service points as MSU took control of the match in the fourth set keyed by a defense that frustrated Angelo State into 11 errors and -.047 team attack percentage.
And it was Maxwell who seemed to be in the middle of every point in the set as she had five kills, five digs and two blocks as the Mustangs pulled away for a 25-16 win in the fourth set.
Midwestern recorded 81 total digs for the match led as senior libero
Shay Velasquez led a quartet of Mustangs with more than 10 digs with 23 digs, while
Allison Schreiber had 14,
Kiara Jordan added 11 and White finished with 10.
Schreiber, who completed her ninth double-double of the season, directed the MSU attack to a .203 kill percentage with 51 assists.
