SAN ANGELO, Texas – Midwestern State was shorthanded for Wednesday night's Lone Star Conference contest at Junell Center/Stephens Arena as leading scorer
Brandy Moore sat out after rolling her ankle last week.
That injury caused a lack of depth which played a big role as Angelo State ran away with a 70-47 win over the Mustangs.
Midwestern State, which fell to 8-10 on the season and 2-3 in the LSC South, not only went without Moore, who leads MSU in scoring with 15.6 points per game, but saw another starter –
Rosy Ofoegbu - foul out of the contest, yet another leave early with another ankle injury in
Kaylon Hodge while other starters
Stacey Staten and
Brittni Morrison fight foul trouble.
Junior
Tiffany Cook stepped up to notch her second double-double of the season with a team-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, but it was not enough to overcome the Mustangs' depth trouble and a late run by the Rambelles.
Staten committed her fourth personal at the 15:35 mark of the second half when the Mustangs trailed 37-23.
But the Mustangs rallied with their senior point guard on the bench to a 6-1 run to cut the Angelo State advantage to 38-29 with 13:15 remaining.
The Rambelles answered the call with a flourish of 3-pointers from Lindsey Leatherman and Camille Perkins and would stretch the lead 61-44 with 7:49 remaining.
The Mustangs would cut the deficit to 11 on a
Brittny Smith layup with 5:34, but that's as close it would get .
Leatherman paced Angelo State with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Perkins added 21 points and Nichelle Parks had 13.
The Mustangs play host to Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Angelo State improved to 17-3 and 4-1.
