ADA, Okla. - Jeremy Ford's career night wasn't enough to overcome an eight-minute field goal drought for Midwestern State Thursday night at Kerr Center as the Mustangs fell 83-77 to East Central in overtime.
The senior guard poured in seven 3-pointers to finish with 27 points after hitting eight treys to finish with 24 points Saturday against Central Oklahoma.
But it was not enough to offset Terrell Carpenter's 27-point explosion as the Mustangs fell to 2-3 in overtime contests and 7-6 overall.
"We spent a lot of time talking about (Carpenter)," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "He went and got his anyway and you have to give him credit. He led them and won the game for them tonight."
The Mustangs built their biggest advantage of the game when
Trajinski Grigsby connected on the front end of a one-and-one to give MSU a 61-50 lead with 8:27 to play.
"We did a great job of building the lead in the second half, but then we went through a slump," Ray said. "We were taking good shots from point-blank range, but couldn't finish. We just didn't have any luck."
Jordan Coffman, who canned three treys to finish with a career high 14 points while dishing out eight assists, hit 3-pointers on both ends of the drought which started at 10:08 and ended at 2:11.
"The last shot Jordan hit to put us up 68-63 with 2:11 left should have been enough for a win if we would have taken care of business on the other end of the floor," Ray said.
The Tigers took advantage of the drought to land a 7-2 run to close to 65-63 with 3:43 to go and were able to knot the game at 70-70 on a Tyler Thetford trey with 35 seconds left.
East Central's Ian Adams, a 6-9 center from St. George's, Grenada, netted seven points in the overtime period as the Tigers never trailed in the extra period.
Chris Davis was the only other Mustang in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Grigsby finished with nine points and 10 boards.
Joining Carpenter in double digits for East Central was Adams with 16 points, while Thetford and Don Riley had 11.
The Mustangs close out Lone Star Conference crossover play at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
East Central improved to 9-4.
