Mustangs Women upset Angelo State 53-51

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State University Mustangs grabbed a needed Lone Star Conference South victory Saturday night at Gerald Stockton Court in D.L. Ligon Coliseum as senior Sonya Calhoun-Courtney got a layup with four seconds left to upset Angelo State University 53-51.

MSU evened its record at 10-10 overall, raising its LSC South mark to 3-5.  Angelo State dropped to 12-8, 4-4.

The Mustangs nearly let the contest slip away.

MSU built a nine-point first half lead and led 32-25 at halftime.

Then they came out of intermission with a 9-6 run to claim a 13-point 44-31 advantage on a layup and free throw by Kaylon Hodge with 12:48 to go.  Little did MSU know it would be the last field goal the Mustangs would make for 12 minutes.

But the Rambelles answered with an 11-2 run to pull within four within four with 5:30 to play before Hodge hit 3-of-4 free throws over a 1:20 time frame to extend the MSU lead to 49-42.

But a pair of free throws from Tiffany Harwell and a three-pointer from Lindsey Leatherman set up the Rambelles to tie the score at 49-all when Leatherman hit a running jumper with 2:18 to play.

Both teams let opportunities go by the way down the stretch before the senior Calhoun-Courtney stepped up.  Having a sub-par game to her standards, the Euless/Trinity senior drove the baseline for a layup with 45 seconds left to regain the lead.

The Rambelles answered with a Hardwell jumper with 31 seconds left.

MSU ran the clock down before Stacey Staten found Calhoun-Courtney with a leading pass for a layup and the game-winner.

Staten sealed the game by stealing the ball from Hardwell and the celebration was on.

Hodge led the Mustangs with 11 points and six rebounds, while Brittni Burks came off the bench with 10 points.  Staten had nine points with four steals and Calhoun-Courtney netted eight.

ASU got 12 points from Leatherman to go with five boards to lead the way.  Ashley King collected nine points and Hardwell eight.  Michelle Mitchell also had five rebounds for the Rambelles.

MSU is off until Wednesday when it hosts Abilene Christian for the second half of LSC South division play.  Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., with the men's game following at 8.
