GOLDEN, Colo. – Midwestern State saw it all Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field.
The No. 5 Mustangs saw the highs as senior striker
Daniel Brown hit a pair of first-half goals.
They saw chaos as Colorado Mines coach Frank Kohlenstein was ejected after Brown's first goal in the 23rd minute.
Then, they experienced the lows after reserve forward
Eddie Lett was ejected after making an aggressive slide tackle, forcing the Mustangs to work the final 50 minutes a man down.
But add it all up and you get a 2-1 win in a crucial Midwest Region match over the Orediggers in front of 234 rabid fans.
"That was a great, very intense win going against a hostile crowd and a hostile referee," MSU coach
Doug Elder said.
The Mustangs, who have now eight straight to improve to 11-1, got a pair of first-half goals from their star forward and looked comfortable heading into the intermission.
Brown had converted a mis-struck indirect kick in the box to give MSU a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
"The ball was hit to his right and he had to slide to get to it then he shanked it in off the post," Elder said.
Brown then added his 14th goal in the 39th minute by running down a through ball on the wing and stroking it past Colorado Mines' goalkeeper Denver Williams to put the Mustangs up 2-0.
"Brownie was incredible today," Elder said. "They were all over him."
It was then when Lett, who had been on the pitch just five minutes, was whistled for the hard slide tackle and ejected from the contest.
"It was a good thing we had the lead," Elder said. "Once we got that ejection, the tide turned a little bit, but our defense held very, very strong."
The Orediggers could only muster a goal by Nick Kubala in the 79th minute despite having a man advantage throughout the second half against a short-handed defense buoyed by junior
Brannon Calvert.
"Brannon had one of the best games of his career," Elder said. "He was exceptional."
The Mustangs needed the win to stay ahead of West Texas A&M, which improved to 9-1 with a 2-1 win over Fort Lewis earlier Sunday at Brooks Field.
"We overcame a lot of adversity and showed a lot of heart and character this weekend," Elder said. "But there's still a lot of soccer to play."
Midwestern hits the road next weekend to face St. Edward's on Friday before getting a chance to avenge its lone loss of the season Sunday at Incarnate Word.
