CANYON, Texas – Junior designated hitter
Baylee Voigt blasted her first career grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to lift Midwestern State into the Lone Star Conference semifinals with a 12-8 victory over No. 3 seed Cameron Friday afternoon at West Texas A&M's Schaeffer Park.
Midwestern State (30-27) scored the final seven runs of the game to erase an 8-5 deficit and move on to the semifinals to face second-seeded Texas Woman's at 5 p.m.
In the sixth inning, junior first baseman
Erin Knox doubled to left center to drive in a pair of runs for the Mustangs and cut their deficit to one. Senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson led off the frame with a double to left center while senior center fielder
Haley Howerton was hit by a pitch to set up Knox's two-RBI hit. Junior left fielder
Taylor Bermudes capped off the scoring for the Mustangs in the sixth with the third double of the inning to score Knox for an 8-8 ballgame.
Singles for Howerton and senior second baseman
Chelsey Wall sandwiched around a Vinson walk loaded the bases with one out in the seventh for the Maroon and Gold. After clinching MSU a spot in the LSC Tournament last Friday, Voigt came through once again for the Mustangs with a bomb to left field for her 11th homer of the season to propel MSU into the lead.
Cameron threatened in the seventh, putting two runners on with one out before a liner to center and a flyout to right ended the game.
Midwestern carried the momentum early in the contest, putting up a four-run third inning behind three hits and one error to take a 4-0 lead. Voigt drove in the first run of the game with a single up the middle following a Vinson walk and Knox reaching on an error. A Bermudes single and an illegal pitch plated the second run of the game before a two-RBI single up the middle for Wall capped off the frame for MSU.
The Aggies plated all eight of their runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab an 8-5 lead on the Mustangs. Cameron totaled six singles and two doubles in the inning while also plating runs behind two hit batters and a passed ball.
Voigt finished with a career-high five RBI while Wall tied a career-best three hits to lead MSU at the plate. A total of five Mustangs finished with multiple hits on the day as MSU belted out 14 compared to Cameron's nine. Redshirt freshman
Peyton Helton came on in relief to earn the win, allowing four hits, two earned runs and two walks with one strikeout in 3.0 innings to improve to 10-9 on the season.
