Championship run comes to an end for Mustangs in loss to TWU

CANYON, Texas – Midwestern State's Lone Star Conference Championship run came to an end Friday evening as the Mustangs fell to No. 2 seed Texas Woman's in the LSC semifinals, 6-4, at West Texas A&M's Schaeffer Park.

Texas Woman's (32-21) scored runs in each of the first four innings, erasing an early 3-0 deficit to punch its ticket to the LSC Championship tomorrow afternoon.

Midwestern State (30-28) totaled three runs in the top of the first behind a pair of hits and an error to carry the momentum in the early going. Senior third baseman Katelyn Vinson led off the inning with a single to left center field before a throwing error in the TWU infield allowed Vinson to come around and score after senior center fielder Haley Howerton reached on a fielder's choice. An RBI single for junior right fielder Erin Knox extended the MSU lead to 2-0 before a bases loaded walk for sophomore catcher Amanda Thomas drove in the third run of the frame.

The Pioneers cut into the MSU lead in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run to left center for shortstop Nicole Nordie. TWU went in front in the second inning after a pair of walks and a throwing error in the infield plated two additional runs for a 4-3 advantage for the Pioneers.

Back-to-back bunt singles and a sac bunt put two runners on with no outs for the Pioneers in the third before a groundout to third gave TWU a 5-3 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Midwestern State cut into its deficit in the fourth as junior shortstop Tammy Viliamu doubled to left field to score freshman pitcher Makenzi Harris, who led off the inning with a double to center.

Nordie drove in her third run of the game in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single up the middle to give TWU a 6-4 lead.

The Mustangs were unable to mount a comeback for the second-straight game as the Maroon and Gold were limited to just one hit the final three innings.

Katie Hickey (6-4) earned the win for the Pioneers in the circle, allowing four hits, four walks and an earned run while fanning two batters. Harris (9-8) was saddled with the loss for MSU, giving up five hits, three earned runs and three walks with three strikeouts to her stat line.

Midwestern State will learn its postseason fate Monday at 9 a.m. (CT) when the NCAA Division II Softball Committee unveils the 64-team tournament field on NCAA.com. The Mustangs appeared at No. 10 in this week's South Central Regional poll before defeating Cameron, who was ranked seventh in the rankings. The top eight teams from the region will move on to the NCAA Tournament.
