KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Midwestern State racked up 14 singles en route to an 8-0 run-rule win over Texas A&M International Sunday morning in the finale of the Javelina Softball Classic at Hubert Field.
Midwestern, which improved to 7-3 on the season, plays host to the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational next weekend at Mustangs Park. MSU takes on Arkansas Tech in its home opener Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. before facing Texas A&M International at 7 p.m.
The Mustangs jumped on TAMIU starter Kyndall Reaves from the outset.
Courtney Bingham,
Christina Roosmalen and
Katelyn Vinson all delivered RBIs in the opening frame while
Elena Bennett stole home for the first of her three thefts for the game as the Mustangs led 4-0 through one inning.
MSU added two more runs in the second as
Kim Jerrick scored on a wild pitch and
Kelley Schaefer served a two-out single to center field to plate Bingham to push the advantage to 6-0.
Bennett pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fourth when she reached on a leadoff single to left field, stole second and third before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Mustangs forced the run-rule in the fifth as
Chelsey Wall delivered a pinch-hit single down the left-field line to lead off the inning. Jerrick was intentionally walked and Bennett reached on an infield single to load the bases before Bingham cracked a run-scoring single to left field to end the game.
Freshman
Laci Belovsky allowed two hits in five innings to notch her first collegiate shutout while improving to 4-2 on the season.
Bennett and Bingham notched three hits to pace the MSU attack while Schaefer and Roosmalen had two hits apiece.
Texas A&M International dropped to 4-5 on the season.
