ABILENE, Texas – The Midwestern State women saw four of their six players advance in the opening round of the weather-hampered ITA Small College Regional.
Rains on Saturday forced delays in the tournament as play was held on a limited number of indoor courts until Sunday.
Kayla Casey had no problem in the opener against Western New Mexico's Ashley Newell 6-2, 6-2. However, she then met tournament top seed Julia Mongin of Abilene Christian who won 6-2, 6-2.
Taylor Coffman defeated St. Edward's Francesca Chaher 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round. She lost in the round of 32 to seventh seeded Brittney Reed of ACU 6-4, 6-3.
Lauren Pineda went the distance to open with a win over Colorado State-Pueblo's Teres Haro 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. She advanced to the second round to face ACU's Hannah Kelly and dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Sarita Adhikary came from behind to beat Arkansas-Fort Smith's Amy Belanger 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 in the round of 64. She faced fourth seeded Micah Hermsdorf of ACU in the second round. Hermsdorf won the first set 6-3 and was leading 3-2 when Adhikary retired.
Kendra Casey lost a tough match in the opening round to ACU's Kaysie Hermsdorf 6-7, 6-2, 10-5.
Madeline Schorlemmer dropped her first rounder to Tarleton State's Melanie Barnes in a 6-3, 5-7, 14-12 extended final set match.
