SAN ANGELO – The No. 16 Midwestern State Mustangs stand second just three strokes off the lead at the inaugural Angelo State Concho River Classic at the Bentwood Country Club.
 
The Mustangs posted a team score of 300, and sit just behind No. 4 St. Edward's at 297 and are three shots ahead of No. 5 Tarleton State at 303.
 
"It was a great day to play," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "The greens are severe with a lot of undulation, and we did a great job of getting in position to putt by hitting a lot of fairways and greens."
 
The Mustangs were paced by senior Lindsey Burkhart who toured the par 72, 5960 yard course in 1-over 73 in a four-way tie for fourth, three strokes off the lead.
 
Incarnate Word's Flower Castillo leads the tournament individually, firing a 2-under 70 in the first round, one stroke ahead of Angelo State's Abby Bobo who carded a 1-under 71.  Wallis Spears of St. Ed's is third at even-par 72.
 
Burkhart was joined by sophomore Brenna Moore who posted a 3-over 75 for 11th, that included a double bogey on the 17th.
 
"Brenna had a great round going, but slipped up on the back nine," said Ray.  "But she really did play well.  In fact, all five played well."
 
Seniors Taylor Klutts and Lauren Romines chipped in 4-over 76s, while senior Kendra Whittley added a 5-over 77.
 
Playing as an individual, freshman Kynze Mann tallied an 84.
 
The final round of the tournament is Tuesday.
