JOPLIN, Mo. - A strong showing by Midwestern State's top three netted a fourth-place showing Saturday morning at the Missouri Southern Stampede.
Â
Juniors
Ashley Flores and
Janel Campbell covered the 5K course in 18:09.78 and 18:10.05 to finish 12th and 13th respectively while sophomore
Michelle Krezonoski was close behind in 21st with a time of 18:24.36.
Â
"Ashley, Janel and Michelle did really well," MSU coach
Koby Styles said. "They moved up during the race, but we really need to start working on some more race strategy with them. Ashley had a lot left at the end."
Â
The 18-team field also showed a few notable surprises as unranked Missouri Southern emerged as a national threat nudging the Mustangs by a 115-144 count behind Division I performers Tulsa (19) and Arkansas (72).
Â
"It was a wakeup call and we got humbled today," Styles said. "Now our backs are against the wall and we're ready to fight."
Â
The Mustangs struggled to close the gap time between Nos. 3 and 4 as 32 runners crossed the finish line in the 43 seconds that elapsed between Michelle and
Kim Krezonoski, who finished 53rd with a time of 19:07.37.
Â
Junior transfer
Abigail Gonzalez finished 23 seconds later in 68th place with a time of 19:30.24.
Â
"We had too big of a gap time from three all way down today," Styles said. "We had a minute and 51 seconds between Nos. 1 and 5 and Missouri Southern's was 55 seconds. That's our weakness and we have to work on that."
Â
Other Mustang performances included freshmen
Brittany Adams (19:36.69/68th), Alex Kohrs (19:40.92/75th),
Maira Salinas (19:56.71/85th) and
Ana Lopez (20:01.30) while sophomore
Cara Mack clocked a 20:45.92 to finish 113th.
Â
Midwestern State enjoys a week off before heading to another big meet at the Kansas Invitational on Sep. 29 in Lawrence.
Â
"We'll have to get to work," Styles said. "I have a feeling this team is going to be a different team come November."
