WOMEN'S SOCCER: MSU comes in ready to play
Midwestern State coach Jeff Trimble had to like what he saw Monday morning when 24 of his 28 players came in under the designated time in the mile run.
"I feel like we showed that we worked in the offseason," he said. "I was very impressed with the fitness level and work rate. The girls worked really hard for a first day of practice."
The squad completed the fitness test which also included a timed 40-yard dash and shuttle run before moving on to the evening practice.
"That really looked like it was the first time we played together," Trimble said.
Trimble lauded Maddie Fraser and Mallory Whitworth, who ran the fourth fasted 40 time as a goalkeeper, while freshmen Ashley Cottrell and Jennifer Justice earned praise following their first collegiate practice.
The Mustangs continue two-a-days Tuesday with training sessions at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
COUNTDOWN TO THE OPENER -- 17 DAYS: Midwestern State opens the 2012 campaign against No. 10 Fort Lewis (Colo.) as part of the MSU Classic on Friday, Aug. 31 at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. West Texas A&M and Colorado Mesa lead off the classic earlier in the afternoon (3 p.m.).

VOLLEYBALL: Mustangs preach positivity on first day of workouts
The main message for Midwestern State for the first day of drills seemed to ring a common tone after the practice session -- positivity.
As the team gathered around for the own after-practice assessment each pointed to a good, aggressive practice and even more so everyone pointed to the constantly positive atmosphere inside D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
"I was pleasantly surprised," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said. "Everyone worked really well together."
The went through fitness testing in the morning before spending the majority of the afternoon practice on ball work fundamentals done the Mustang way and the other part on playing 6-on-6.
"I wanted to do something fun," Flores-Stafford said. "There was a lot of talking and no timidness. I am very excited about that."
The Mustangs closed the day with an hour of swim conditioning in the evening.
The squad picks up with a pair of practices on Tuesday from 8-10 a.m. then again from 2-4 p.m.
COUNTDOWN TO THE OPENER -- 17 DAYS: Midwestern State opens its 2012 campaign by facing St. Mary's (Texas) and Southeastern Oklahoma on Friday, Aug. 31 in the Rattler-Hilltopper Classic in San Antonio. Both matches will be at Bill Greehey Arena at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.

FOOTBALL: More preseason honors come MSU's way
Midwestern State opens up at No. 4 in the American Football Coaches' Association Preseason Poll released Monday afternoon.
That's the good news. The bad news is the Mustangs will face one of their toughest schedules ever with all of their five opponents on the road receiving mention in the poll.
"Rankings are nice to have for the public, but they only mean something when you get to the end of the season," MSU coach Bill Maskill said. "It's about Midwestern doing what it needs to do. We have a lot of young talent that has to grow up and mature."
More preseason individual honors rolled in as senior quarterback Brandon Kelsey and senior offensive lineman Ken Van Heule were named to the USA College Football preseason second-team All Americans while senior center Justen Tyler was tapped a third teamer and junior running back Keidrick Jackson and senior deep snapper Randall Arbuckle gained honorable mention.
The Mustangs hit the field for another afternoon practice Tuesday at 4:50 p.m. before going through a morning drill Wednesday at 9:35 a.m.
The team tries its first two-a-day session Thursday at 9:20 a.m. and 4:50 p.m.
WEATHER FORECAST: The forecasted high for Tuesday is 98 degrees with 35-percent humidity and a 20-percent chance of rain. The projection for practice time is 96 degrees with low 24-percent humidity to make the temperature feel like 94 degrees with the out of the east southeast at 14 mph.
COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF -- 26 DAYS: Midwestern State opens the regular season at Tarleton State on Saturday, Sep. 8at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville, Texas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER: Returners show the way on opening day of camp
The Midwestern State way wasn't apparent to the many newcomers on the 2012 edition of the Mustangs early Monday morning.
"We took a fitness test at the field and I was a little disappointed in our times," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "We were way behind last year's results but considering we have a lot of new guys that was to be expected."
But, by the time afternoon practice rolled around, the coach said it was intense and competitive but still with a lot to work on.
"That's the way we play here," Elder said. "We like to grind it out and outwork our opponent."
Elder lauded MSU returning seniors David Freeland and Fernando Garza and junior B.A. Catney.
"They were all really good today," he said. "It's their time to shine."
The Mustangs get a bit of change-up by participating in a cross fit workouts Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
MSU hits the field for two training sessions Tuesday at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. with the first intersquad scrimmage on the horizon Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Mustangs take on Oklahoma City University in an exhibition match at home on Friday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
