MUSTANGS CAMP NOTES: Three more squads report for duty, commence championship quest

Here is the second installment of Midwestern State's Fall Camp Notebook provided by the MSU Athletic Communication Office.
 
MEN'S SOCCER: New faces abound for Mustangs
 
The 14th-ranked Mustangs have their work cut out for them this season as coach Doug Elder greeted 23 new players into the fold on Sunday's reporting day.
 
"This is a great opportunity for us as this will be one of the youngest teams we've had," he said. "This is one of the few years that we may see freshman and lower classmen be able to work their way into extensive playing time."
 
A mix of 14 incoming freshman, two redshirts and 15 transfers hit the ground running with a fitness test Monday morning to jump start a week of two-a-day training sessions.
 
The Mustangs go at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. through Thursday with an intersquad scrimmage Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. on the game field.
 
The week culminates with an exhibition game against Oklahoma City Friday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
 
COUNTDOWN TO THE OPENER -- 18 DAYS: Midwestern State opens the season against Texas A&M International on Friday, Aug. 31 at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Dustdevils are receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America preseason national poll.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: LSC Champs prep for fitness test
 
The Mustangs welcomed 28 student-athletes for Sunday's pre-camp physicals and briefings including 10 incoming freshmen and a newcomer.
 
"This is an exciting day with seeing everyone in the same room and as a whole," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "This is going to be a fun time."
 
The Mustangs return seven starters and 15 letter winners off of last year's 14-6-2 Lone Star Conference championship squad.
 
LSC preseason honorees Mallory Whitworth and Hanna Staley will lead the Mustangs into a physical testing Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. which includes a mile run, 40-yard dash and a shuttle run. The Mustangs practice against at 6 p.m.
 
MSU then hits a standard two-a-day run practicing at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. until Thursday before taking on its first competition on Friday.
 
COUNTDOWN TO THE OPENER -- 18 DAYS: Midwestern State opens the 2012 campaign against No. 10 Fort Lewis (Colo.) as part of the MSU Classic on Friday, Aug. 31 at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. West Texas A&M and Colorado Mesa lead off the classic earlier in the afternoon (3 p.m.).

VOLLEYBALL: Mustangs excited to get started
 
The Mustangs welcomed a squad of 13 in preparation for fall camp Sunday afternoon.
 
"We are just excited to get started," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said.
 
MSU returns three starters and eight letter winners bolstered the addition of three transfers and two incoming freshmen.
 
The team hits the floor for fitness testing Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. before taking on practices at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m.
 
The first day culminates with a team meal at University United Methodist Church.
 
COUNTDOWN TO THE OPENER -- 18 DAYS: Midwestern State opens its 2012 campaign by facing St. Mary's (Texas) and Southeastern Oklahoma on Friday, Aug. 31 in the Rattler-Hilltopper Classic in San Antonio. Both matches will be at Bill Greehey Arena at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.

FOOTBALL: MSU 'sluggish' in second day of workouts
 
Midwestern State is ranked as high as No. 4 in preseason polls, but coach Bill Maskill didn't quite feel the Mustangs are quite ready to fit the billing at the end of the second practice of camp Sunday afternoon.
 
"We hit the wall near the last session," he said. "These guys just don't know how to practice yet. It's a process but we have a lot of guys running tonight."
 
The Mustangs hit the field the next two afternoons for single practices starting at 4:50 p.m. then have another single practice Wednesday morning at 9:35 a.m. before taking on a two-a-day slate Thursday at 9:20 a.m. and 4:50 p.m.
 
WEATHER FORECAST: The forecasted high for Monday is 102 degrees with 30-percent humidity and a 10-percent chance of rain. The projection for practice time is 100 degrees with low 17-percent humidity to make the temperature feel like 96 degrees with the out of the northeast at 11 mph.
 
COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF -- 27 DAYS: Midwestern State opens the regular season at Tarleton State on Saturday, Sep. 8at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville, Texas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
